Mrs. Anna May Mercer, 78, of Route 8, Chester Rd 1, died today at 5:35 a.m. in City Hospital following a one-day illness.
She was born June 20, 1897, in Fredericktown, Mrs. Mercer retired in 1963 from the Homer Laughlin China Co. and was an honorary member of the IBPAW. She was a member of the Pleasnat Hills Wesleyan Methodist Church of Hookstown.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Wilson E. Mercer, Jan. 29, 1973.
Survivors include two sons, Elmer L. Mercer and Charles W. Mercer, both of Chester RD 1; a daughter, Mrs. Theresa Reed of Gerogetown; two halfbrothers, Fred Douglas of Newell and Arthur Douglas of Akron; a halfsister, Mrs. Mabel Risner of East Liverpool; 14 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
Services will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at the Arner Funeral Chapel in Chester by the Rev. Paul Treese of the church. Burial will be in Locust Hill Cemetery.

Mrs. Della Vay Mercer, 77, wife of J. Willard Mercer of Hookstown, doed Thursday morning in City Hospital. A patient four days, she had been ill for several months with a heart ailment.

She leaves two sons, Robert Mercer of Georgetown, and Homer Mercer at home; a daughter, Mrs. Sara LeMasters of Midland Heights, Pa.; three brothers, John Cunningham of Pughtown, and Walter Cunningham and Clyde Cunningham of Chester; and four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Rites will be held in the late home Sunday at 2:30 p.m. by Rev. Mrs. C. V. Hairhoger, pastor of the Georgetown Methodist Church, assisted by Rev. M. V. Stone, pastor of the Chester Methodist Church. Burial will be in Locust Hill Cemetery.
Friends may call tonight and Saturday at the late home.

NEWELL – Norman Mercer, 74, of 2250 Congo Rd., died Friday at 6:30 p.m. at City Hospital after a long illness.
He was born April 19, 1911, in Congo, W.Va., a son of John J. Mercer and Eva Lee Mercer.
Mr. Mercer retired in 1973 from Homer Laughlin China Co. after 20 years as a slipmaker.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia Mercer, at home; a son, Norman Mercer of Columbus; a daughter, Mrs. Ed (Donna) Childs of Congo; a sister, Mrs. Wilda Reed of Toronto; and four grandchildren.
A memorial service is planned at Locust Hill Cemetery at noon Monday with Mitch Nixon, his nephew, offering the eulogy.
The Arner Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

He leaves his widow, Mrs. Mayme Todd Myler, at home; a daughter, Mrs. Jacqueline Ciminelli of Leetonia; a son, John D. Myler of Sebring; a brother, Sam Myler of Newell; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Gothier of Seal Beach, Calif., and Mrs. Daisy Flechtner of Tiffin and a grandson.

Carl Baker, 906, Fairview St., retired Pennsylvania Railroad brakeman, died Thursday at 7 p.m. in City Hospital, following a long illness. He was 55.
Mr. Baker had been retired for two years. He was born in East Liverpool, a son of the late Frank and Mary Ball Baker. His only survivor is a brother, Frank Baker in Florida.
The body was taken to the Dawson Funeral Home for rites Saturday at 2 pm. Burial will be in Spring Grove Cemetery.

Mr. Barkovich was formerly employed by the McLain Fire Brick Co., now a division of he H. K. Porter Co. having retired about 2 ½ years ago. His only survivor is his widow, Mrs. Mary Barkovich in Yugoslavia.
Rites will be held Monday at 10 a.m. in the Hugh Funeral Home by Fr. John Wirtz, assistant pastor of the immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Burial will be in Morningview Cemetery at Irondale.

Funeral Monday For Former Councilman

Thomas P. (Tim) Ferguson, a former East Liverpool Councilman, died today at 6:30 a.m. in his home at 1117 Vine St., following a three-year illness. He was 84.
Mr. Ferguson was a lifetime resident of East Liverpool. He was a salesman for R. Gaertner and the Palm Bros., decal importers and manufacturers for about 20 years and later worked as a clerk in the East Liverpool liquor store. He retired about two years ago because of poor health.
He was a councilman – at – large about 30 years ago. He was a Republican.
He leaves a son, Silas W. Ferguson, at home; a daughter, Mrs. Mildred Leeper of Trenton, Mich.; a brother, Edward Ferguson of Cleveland; a sister, Mrs. Nell Hepplewite, also of Cleveland, and two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. His wife, Mrs. Mary Jane Ferguson, died July 21, 1950.
Rites will be held Monday at 2 p.m. in the Martin Funeral Home by Dr. D. Finley Wood, Pastor of the First Methodist Church. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery.

John W. Beadnell, 81, of Salt Run in Irondale, a retired employe of the Salisbury Clay Mine, died this morning at 12:55 at City Hospital, where he had been a patient five days.
He was born in Irondale Dec. 16, 1864, a son of the late Thomas Beadnell and Hannah Beadnell. He worked as a loader in the mines before retiring. He was a member of the Chestnut Grove Methodist Church.
He leaves two sons, Clifford Beadnell and Leonard Beadnell, both of Baltimore, Md.; two sisters, Mrs. Erma Ferguson and Mrs. Nellie Boston, both of Irondale, and a brother, Clarence Beadnell of Hammondsville.
Services will be held Monday at 2 pm. at the Kerr Funeral Home in Salineville by the Rev. George H. Johnston, former minister of the Anderson Methodist Chruch in Calcutta. Burial will be in Chestnut Grove Cemetery.

A daughter of the late David Martin, who published the Potters Gazette, a weekly East Liverpool newspaper more than 70 years ago, and Mrs. Elizabeth Gardner Martin, she was born in East Liverpool. She was a member of the Orchard Grove Community Methodist Church.
In addition to her husband, she leaves two daughters, Mrs. Ruth Cramer of Salem and Mrs. George Guyton at home; a son, Richard Price of Springdale, Pa., and four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
The body was taken to the Dawson Funeral Home. Arrangements are incomplete.

He was born May 20, 1898, a son of the late Nathan Mercer and Adella Wells Mercer. He was a retired employe of M & E Co. of New Cumberland. He attended the New Cumberland Church of the Nazarene. His wife, Mrs. Clara Heffner Mercer, died March 27, 1958.
He also leaves five sons, Doral Mercer of Santa Maria, Calif., Dwight Mercer and Kenneth Mercer, both of East Liverpool, Robert Mercer and Dwayne Mercer, both of New Cumberland; three other daughters, Mrs. John (Virginia) Delekta of New Cumberland, Mrs. Hubert (Eleanor) Wynn of Santa Maria and Miss Donna Jean Mercer of New Cumberland; two sisters, Mrs. Roy Heffner and Mrs. Virginia Haught, both of Newell; three brothers, Harlan Mercer of Barnesville, Alvin Mercer of Richmond, Ind., and Clarence Mercer of the state of Washington and 19 grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles W. Mercer.

Visitation is from 4-8 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.

Born Jan. 15, 1912, in Hancock County, daughter of the late Hugh W. and Lenora Cameron Thomas, she was a former schoolteacher and a member of the Frankfort Presbyterian Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, E. Wayne Mercer.
She is survived by three sons, Wendell (Maxine) Mercer of Burgettstown, Ronald (Ethel) Mercer of Troutman, M.C., and Kenneth (Sherry) Mercer of Hanover Township. A daughter, Mary Martha McMillian of Frankfort Springs; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Welch Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the church, with the reverends Clint Cottrell and Darrell Cashdollar. Interment will follow at Grandview Cemetery.

Mrs. Catherine Jane Van Vlack, 78, widow of J. B. Van Vlack, died today in her home, Pennsylvania avenue, after six weeks illness of complications of diseases.
Mrs. Van Vlack, who was born in Scotland, had been a resident of Chester for 25 years. She was a member of the First Presbyterian church.
She leaves two sons, and three daughters, Benson, Weirton: George, at home; Mrs. G. M. Woodburn, Akron, O., Mrs. H. W. Buchtel, Canton, O., and Miss Marie Van Vlack, at home. She is also survived by five sisters, Mrs. J. B. McKenna, Jean Mary, Elizabeth and Isabelle Anderson, all of Parkersburg.

NEWELL – Edwin L. Mercer, 68, of Congo died Monday, Feb. 27, 1995, at City Hospital following a lengthy illness.
He was born in Newell March 22, 1926, a son of the late Wilbur and Okla Gilmore Mercer.
He was employed at the Newell Co. and was a truck driver for Panhandle Equipment. He served with the U. S. Army during World War II. He was a Protestant.
He is survived by his wife, Ann Stalnaker Mercer, whom he married Sept. 9, 1991; two sisters, Bette Burch of Newell and Okla Hood of Jonesboro, Ga.; four nieces and four nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Raymond Gilmore.
Pastor Richard Chambers of the Congo Church of the Nazarene will conduct services at 11 a.m. Friday at the Nixon Funeral Home. The Tri-State Veterans Burial Group will accord military honors graveside at Shadow Lawn Memory Gardens

She was a homemaker and lived most of her life in the area. She was a Protestant.
She is survived by her husband, Dale L. Mercer, Sr., whom she married in June 1947; a son, Dale Mercer Jr. of East Liverpool; two daughters, Patty Stearns and Janet L. Bragg of East Liverpool; two brothers, Robert Smith of San Diego, Calif., and Hilton Smith of Kansas; a sister of Kansas; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother and a sister.
The Rev. Paul Sturm of Rainbow Ministries will conduct the services at noon at the Martin Chapel of the Martin-Altmeyer Funeral Homes.

Besides her husband, William Mercer, survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Deborah Lynne Osborne of New Iberia, La., Mrs. Patricia Darlene Crissinger and Mrs. Stephanie Ann Freeman, both of New Cumberland and Tina Louise Mercer of Chester RD 1; a son, Kenneth William Mercer of Chester RD 1; a sister, Mrs. James (Jean) Norton of New Cumberland RD; two brothers, Harold Dean Westfall of Kirby, W. Va., and Roger Lyle Westfall of New Cumberland RD2; and two grandchildren.

Donald Mountford, 1134 hillcrest Rd, Wellsville, died Thursday at 6:15 in City Hospital, where he had been a patient since Monday. He was 56.
Mr. Mountford, custodian of Fairview School at Hillcrest until March 1, when he became ill, was born Nov. 2, 1901 in East Liverpool, a son of the late Samuel and Mary Elizabeth Brick Mountford. He spent the greater part of his life in East Liverpool and Wellsville and resided at Hillcrest for the past six years. He was employed as a serviceman for the D. M. Ogilvie & Co. store for several years until taking the school job about a year ago.
Mr. Mountford was a member of the First Methodist Church at Wellsville but had been attending the Yellow Creek Presbyterian Church. He was a member of Wellsville Masonic Lodge ?.
He leaves his widow, Mrs. Leola Wickline Mountford, and a son, Robert Edward Mountford at home, and five sisters, Mrs. Nina Clark of Wellsville, Mrs. Nettie Hewitt of Springfield, Mrs. Ruby Kerr and Mrs. Aletha Stipe, both of Cleveland and Mrs. Helen Skipp of Youngstown.
The body was taken to the Mac-Lean Funeral Home in Wellsville, where Masonic rites will be held Sunday at 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at Mac-Lean’s by the Rev. Richard Beidler, pastor of the Yellow Creek Church. Burial will be in Yellow Creek Cemetery.

Mr. Mercer was born in New Cumberland June 4, 1893, a son of William Mercer and Nancy Stacey Mercer.
He was a lifelong resident of the area and retired in 1958 as a mine car repairman with Globe Refractories after 38years service. He was a member of the Gendale Church of the Nazarene.
In addition to his widow, Mrs. Sylvia Starling Mercer, whom he married Jan. 20, 1915, survivors include two sons, Robert E. Mercer of Newell and F. Richard Mercer of East Liverpool; 9 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

He was born in Newell Oct. 1, 1901, a son of John T. Mercer and Eva Lee Mercer. He had resided in Congo before going to Columbus in August 1974. Mr. Mercer retired as a jiggerman at Plant 4 of the Homer Laughlin China Co. after 40 year’s service. He was a member of IBPAW.
Besides his widow, Mrs. Glenrose Dray Mercer, whom he married April 12, 1935, survivors include a son, Edwin L. Mercer of Newell, and a nephew Richard Pederson of Congo, whom the Mercers raised; a brother, Norman Mercer of Congo, and a sister, Mrs. Ray (Wilda) Reed of Toronto.
Services will be held Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at the Martin Funeral Home. Burial will be in Locust Hill Cemetery, Chester.

She was born in Oberlin, Ohio, Aug. 2, 1918, daughter of the late James A. and Amelia Hoeh Edwards.
She in the dental office of Dr. Ray Phipps in Oberlin.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gordon Comings.
She is survived by two sons, Andrew Comings of Roseville, Calif., and Chuck Comings of Frankfort, Ky.
The Dawson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Burial will be in Oberlin.

Lisbon, Nov. 11. -- (Special.) – Mrs. Sarah Walters, of North Jefferson street died last evening at 11:30 o’clock from the effects of a paralytic stroke which she suffered Tuesday. Mrs. Walters was a life-long resident of Lisbon and the widow of David Walters, who receded her in death about six years ago.
She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. L. B. Pike and Mrs. Lyman Van Fossen, and one son, George Walters, all of whom live in this city. Mrs. Walters was a faithful and consistent member of he Methodist Episcopal church and was an enthusiastic worker in its cause until the infirmities of age prevented her activities. She was known and respected by a large circle of friends, who truly mourn her death.
Funeral services have not yet been made and will be announced later.

Mr. Woodrow, who was born in Virginia had lived in Yellow Creek and Madison townships for more than 50 years.
He leaves his widow, Mrs. Ethel McPherson Woodrow, and one son, Frank, at home, and a brother, William H. Woodrow, of the Wellsville Salineville road.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. in the Yellow Creek Presbyterian church in charge of Rev. Edwin D. Bevler. Burial will be made in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Tustin was born Dec. 17, 1901, in Dixonville, a daughter of W. Willlis Chamberlain and Anna Camp Chamberlain.
She retired in 1960 as a switchboard operator for General Telephone Co.
Her husband, Alden Tustin, died in 1968.
Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Bernard (Lucetta) Reber of Chester, W,Va.
Services are to be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Sigler Funeral Home in East Liverpool By the Rev. Russell Duncan of the Grace United Presbyterian Church.

Gilford Leroy Hughes, 81, of 723 10th Ave., a former Midland resident, died today at the Beaver Valley Geriatric Center following a long illness.
An Army World War I veteran, Mr. Hughes was born March 20, 1901, in Hanging Rock, Ohio, son of Jerry Hughes and Milissa Wallace Hughes.
He retired as a yardmaster in the Transportation Department of Crucible Steel Division of Colt Industries in Midland, where he was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church.
He also was a member of the Glasgow Masonic Lodge 485 in Shippingport.
His wife, Mary Mabel Hughes, died in 1956.
Survivors include a daughter, Patricia Hughes of New Brighton, and a brother, Ralph Hughes of Niles, Ohio.
Services are to be held Saturday at 4 p.m. at the David D. Schwerha Funeral Home in Midland, where friends may call two hours prior to the service.
The Rev. Michael Garner is the pastor.
Burial is to be in Oak Grove Cemetery, Industry.
The family requests that memorial tributes take the form of contributions to the Crucible Food Bank.

He is survived by a daughter, Tina Moore of Salineville.

Rocco Frontone, 403 3rd St., Wellsville, died today at 3:45 a.m. at the Griffin Rest Home, where he had been a patient over three months. He was 66.
He was born in Italy Sept. 24, 1892, son of the late Antonio and Theresa Montesano Frontone. He came to Wellsville 47 years ago and worked several years for the former American Sheet & Tin Plate Co. and later was employed in steel mills at Gary, Ind.
He returned to Wellsville three years ago from Indianapolis, where he had operated a confectionery.
He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church of Wellsville.
He leaves a brother, Patsy Frontone of Wellsville, and several nephews and nieces.
The MacLean Funeral Home in Wellsville is in charge of arrangements, which are incomplete.

He is survived by two sons, Buddy Ray Kimble of Weirton and Thomas Edward Kimble of Fort Eustis, Va.; two daughters, Mrs. Roger (Bobbie Jean) Givens of New Cumberland RD1 and Mrs. Warner (Billie Jo) Seals of Twinsburg, Ohio; a sister, Mrs. G. N. (Betty) Pittman of Norfolk, Va.; six brothers, George W. Kimble of Denver, Colo., Richard D. Kimble and Archie Kimble of Alliance, Ohio, Edward W. Kimble of Louisville, Ky., Larry Kimble of Weirton and Dewey Kimble of Solon, Ohio and six grandchildren.
Services are to be held at the Turley Funeral Home at 1 p.m. Saturday with the Rev. Herman George officiating.
Burial is to be in Shadow Lawn Memory Gardens in Newell.

Miss Wadding was born on Oct. 6, 1857, at Dayton, Pa., a daughter of William and Marry Wadding. She made her home with Mrs. Hildebrand for the last 30 years.
Miss Wadding was a member of the Methodist church, the missionary society and the W. C. T. U. Mrs. Hildebrand and five nephews and nieces are her only survivors.
Services will be held in the Henry funeral home Thursday at 2 p.m. by Rev. C. L. Cope, pastor of the Methodist church. Burial will be in the Lisbon cemetery.

Mr. Wilson was born in Ireland April 10, 1882. He came to this country at the age of eight, and lived in New Cumberland all his life untit he moved to Hollidays Cove a year ago. He was an engineer in the Weirton tin mill, and was a member of the New Cumberland Presbyterian church.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Margaret Evans Wilson; two brothers,, John Wilson of Holidays Cove and George Wilson of New Cumberland; three sisters, Mrs. H. O. Cullen of Carrollton and Mrs. Grover Baxter and Mrs. Martha Marsh of Hollidays Cove.
Funeral services will be held in Hollidays Cove. Rev. k. L. Barnes of the New Cumberland Presbyterian church will have charge. Burial will be made in the New Cumberland cemetery.

Mrs. Ora Martin Laird, former East Liverpool school teacher and wife of A. J. Laird of 360 Wilson avenue, Beaver, died in the Rochester General Hospital Sunday at 3:30 a.m.
Mr. Laird was employed in the Horace Mann and Neville schools for about seven years before her marriage about 26 years ago when she went to live in Beaver. She was an active member of the Beaver Christian church and was also affiliated with several of the church organizations.
Besides her husband she is survived by two children, Grace and Donald, both at home, three brothers, J. B. Martin of Columbus and Herman and J. Victor Martin of East Liverpool; and three sisters, Mrs. E. L. Green and Alice and Mary Martin of East Liverpool.

Thomas E. Kenna, 47, formerly of East Liverpool, brother-in-law of Councilman Benjamin Ziegler of St. George street, died in his home in Jeanette, Pa., Sunday at 8 p.m. following a three-month illness.
Mr. Kenna, a glassworker by trade, worked in East Liverpool when a boy, leaving here about 25 years ago.
He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Theresa Ziegler Kenna, a son, Arthur, and a daughter, Ruth.
Mr. Ziegler left here today for Jeanette, where he will remain until after the funeral, which will be held probably on Wednesday.

SALINEVILLE, April 7 – Mrs. Eliza Fidoe, 78, wife of Thomas Fidoe, formerly of Salineville, died at noon Sunday in her home in Salem. She has been in poor health for the past nine years after suffering a stroke.
Mrs. Fidoe was born in England Oct. 27, 1869, and came to Salineville about 35 years ago. She resided in Salem for the past 10 years.
Besides her husband, she leaves two sons, Fred Fidoe and Thomas Fidoe Jr. of Salem; a daughter, Amy Fidoe of Salineville; two brothers, Benjamin Rowley and James Rowley of Salineville, and seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Rites will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the Maple Funeral Home in Kensington by Rev. R. A. Marty, pastor of the Methodist Church at Augusta. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery here.

Mrs. Cooper was the widow of Hudson Cooper. She was born in Ben’s Run, W. Va., and had lived in New Cumberland about 57 years. She was a member of the Methodist Church.
She leaves another son, Arch Cooper of Weirton; a sister, Mrs. Alice Maran of Wheeling; two brothers, Frank Smith of Parkersburg, W. Va., and Cy Smith of Sharburg, Pa.,: seven grandchildren, and 33 grandchildren. Another son and daughter are dead.
