CALCUTTA – Mary Elizabeth Hicks of South Surry Road, died Thursday, Jul. 19, 2001, at the Calcutta Health Care Center where she had been a patient for two months.
She was born Oct. 5, 1919, a daughter of the late Raymond and Mary Elizabeth Cole Jackson. Having spent most of her life in the East Liverpool area, Mrs. Hicks retired in December a979 after serving as secretary in the mayor’s office and safety service director’ office at East Liverpool City Hall. She served and was retained under four mayoral administrations, retiring when former Mayor H. A. Tullis left office.
A lifetime member of the First United Methodist Church of East Liverpool, Mrs. Hicks had been involved in many areas of the church, which included the Crusaders Class, a teacher for children’s Sunday school, the United Methodist Women, the choir, the Esther Bible Club and as a youth Counselor for the Methodist Youth Fellowship.
Other areas of interest during her life had her serve as a Cub Scout Den Mother, A DeMolay Mother, A CPR instructor for the American Red Cross, a member of Business and Professional Women and as member of TOPS.
Mrs. Hicks was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Masters; a brother lost diruing World War II, Raymond Jackson; and a step-brother, Retired Col. Karl Jackson, U.S.Army.
Survivors include her husband, Harry Hicks, whom she married May 29, 1941, at home; three sons and their wives, Rev. Gary and Kay Hicks of Bloomville, Ohio, roger and Cindy Hicks of Lakewood, Ohio, and Ray and Diana Hicks of Naples, Fla.; 10 grandchildren, Sean Hicks, Erin Thomsic, Teresa Hicks, Joseph Hicks, Eric Hicks, Jenny Hicks, Monica Hurst, Apt. Aaron Hurst USMC, Tanya McGowan and Troy Hicks; two great-grandchildren, Zachary Hicks and Romana Hicks; and one sister, Thelma Hodnot of East Lliverpool.
Friends will be received at the Dawson Funeral Home on Sunday from noon to 2 and 7 to 9 p.m. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday with Rev. Dave Maly of the First United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Spring Grove Cemetery followed by a reception at the Dawson Family Center.
